Brazil's Men soccer squad prepare for Olympic debut against Germany

After the Women’s tournament kicked off football at the 2020 Olympics on Wednesday - Team GB picking up an impressive victory - the Men’s event has followed suit on Thursday with Mexico and New Zealand among the early winners.

Brazil served notice of their intent - and more importantly their ability - to retain the Olympic Gold medal in men’s football with an impressive 4-2 victory over Germany on Thursday.

Five years ago in Rio, these two sides met in the final and it took a penalty shootout to separate them; here in Yokohama there was an absolute gulf between them in terms of quality, despite the scoreline somehow looking as though it was a reasonably close affair. And while it is only the first match of six if Brazil plan to go all the way once more and emulate Neymar, Marquinhos and Co, there were few flaws on show - outside of errant finishing - to give an indication of how rivals could upset them, even factoring in conceding twice.

Follow all the reaction to Brazil against Germany and the latest Olympics news from Tokyo 2020 below:

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 1-0 Germany

21 mins: This has been a nightmare opening 20 minutes for Germany. Kruse has been non-existent upfront and Amiri has not been able to get into the game either.

Cunha let’s fly this time for Brazil but it’s straight down the throat of Muller from 25 yards out.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 1-0 Germany

18 mins: How was that not 2-0?!

Luiz lumps the ball out of his own half and German centre-back Pieper - who has looked shaky since the beginning of the match - plays a horror header back to his keeper. Richarlison is straight onto it and he tries to go around Muller. It gets caught under his feet a bit but a shot from Claudinho eventually comes in and Muller is equal to it, getting down low to palm away.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 1-0 Germany

15 mins: Antony is giving Raum a torrid time down that right-hand side at the moment. The German full-back simply cannot get to grips with his pace and trickery. He rolls him once more but can’t find the delivery into the box and Germany have it back.

Luiz fouls Amiri 25 yards from goal and this is a chance for the Germans to get the ball into the box.

Captain Arnold goes for goal but it’s straight into the wall.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 1-0 Germany

12 mins: Just two weeks ago Richarlison suffered Copa America heartbreak when Brazil lost the final to Argentina on penalties. Safe to say he has dusted himself down and come again here.

Brazil have dominated the opening 12 minutes here.

GOAL! Brazil 1-0 Germany Richarlison, 9)

9 mins: The Everton man gives Brazil the lead!

It’s been coming! Arana slides a brilliant ball in between the centre-half and full-back and Richarlison runs onto it unchallenged. His initial shot is saved by Muller but the follow-up hits the back of the net.

Just what Brazil deserve.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 0-0 Germany

7 mins: Union Berlin striker Max Kruse leads the line for Germany today but he has had very little to feed off in the early stages here.

Brazil nick the ball back again and break immediately. Arana finds himself with space to run into. He gallops forward and thumps a venomous shot in, but Muller is equal to it and manages to tip around the post.

Germany under the cosh in the early stages.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 0-0 Germany

4 mins: Good start from Brazil! Antony clips it all the way across the box for Claudinho. He pulls the ball across but it’s cut out by German shot-stopper Muller.

Brazil then come again and this time look for the long ball over the top for Richarlison but it’s cut out by Udokhai.

Strange atmosphere in the stadium. Or lack of atmosphere should I say.

Nevertheless, a fast start to the game.

Australia’s Olympic chief John Coates denies publicly bullying Queensland premier

Australia’s Olympic Committee president John Coates has defended his outburst in a press conference which appeared to bully the premier of Queensland into attending the Tokyo Olympics’ opening ceremony.

In a statement released by the Australian Olympic Committee, Coates said that his comments had been “completely misinterpreted by people who weren’t in the room”.

“The premier and I have a long standing and very successful relationship. We both know the spirit of my remarks and I have no indication that she was offended in any way,” he added.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil vs Germany

The players are out on the pitch and we are almost ready to kick off between the gold and silver medals from Rio 2016.

Dani Alves is here! Remarkable to see the most decorated European footballer of all-time here at the Olympic Games.
