F1: 70th Anniversary Grand Prix preview

Follow the latest updates live from Formula One’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone as Valtteri Bottas starts on pole position ahead of Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Last weekend’s British Grand Prix saw Hamilton emerge victorious despite suffering a last-lap puncture, which has given the six-time world champion a healthy lead in the drivers’ standings ahead of Bottas - who was not so lucky as a similar puncture cost him second place and a points finish. The Finn will be looking to make up lost ground this afternoon, but will be taking on Hamilton at a track where he has already won seven times in his career.

Stand-in Nico Hulkenberg produced a stunning qualifying display to take third on the grid in the Racing Point ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, with Daniel Ricciardo also impressing as he secured fifth position on the grid in the Renault. The race gets under way at 2:10pm, and you can follow the live updates below.

Lap 51: Max Verstappen must be feeling the pressure ... right?

"Did you hydrate during the race...? You must have some sweaty hands as well, so don't forget to sanitise..."

Max Verstappen: "I didn't see it coming, after the first stint it seemed like we were really good on our tyres, and then it was a question of how far the Mercedes could go on their hard tyres. But I didn't have any trouble with my tyre at all.

"So far we didn't really have an opportunity in the other races to push them, and I could see I could push them.

"I think we do need to use soft tyres, that seems to suit our car, but we'll just see in Barcelona."

Lewis Hamilton: "Definitely unexpected to have the blistering as much as we did, but I'm very grateful to progress and manage my way through the race.

"Not that I know of at the moment, but I'm sure the team will be looking already because we've never had that before. Pirelli were having troubles with the tyres last week and they just keep putting the tyre pressures up and up and up, and they're literally like balloons now.

"That middle stint - event the first stint was really difficult and I started to fall back towards Max - but that middle stint I was managing like you couldn't believe and it just wasn't doing anything. I was looking in the mirror and could just see they were bald."

Valtteri Bottas: "Very frustrating, starting from pole and finishing from third is not good. As a team we were caught sleeping, Max got passed us and yeah, a bad day.

"Of course I was trying, there was a chance to keep up with Max but as soon as I started to push the tyres just fell apart and I had blisters that Red Bull didn't seem to have.

"You just lose grip when you start to have those blisters in that particular tyre."

The action continue to come thick and fast as the paddock moves on from Silverstone for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona next weekend, where extremely hot temperatures are expected once again that could play right into the hands of Red Bull.

They outsmarted Mercedes in qualifying to ensure Max Verstappen was starting the race on the right tyre, before leaving it up to the talented young Dutchman to do what he does best and take the fight to Hamilton and Bottas, which he did so so brilliantly.

Join us again next weekend for the Spanish Grand Prix in what will be the sixth round of the F1 championship.
