Guardiola confirms no plans to rest players ahead of World Cup

Manchester City and Newcastle shared the points as a sensational and dramatic six-goal thriller in the Premier League ended level at St James’ Park.

Ilkay Gundogan fired the champions ahead after just five minutes and City looked set for a comfortable afternoon when the German midfielder struck from close range.

But Newcastle produced a brilliant response, and deservedly led at half time as Miguel Almiron bundled in an equaliser and Callum Wilson finished off a breakaway.

Erling Haaland hit the post after half-time and moments later Kieran Trippier’s stunning free kick beat Ederson to leave St James’ Park rocking and City in deep trouble.

But Pep Guardiola’s side launched a comeback of their own - as Haaland pulled one back and then Bernardo Silva finished a remarkable Kevin De Bruyne through ball.

In a further twist, Kieran Trippier saw a red card for a high challenge on De Bruyne overturned by VAR, and City could not find a winner.

Thomas Tuchel blames ‘cheap’ mistakes for Elland Road unravelling

Thomas Tuchel accused his Chelsea team of conceding “cheap and unnecessary” goals and gifting Leeds victory as they lost 3-0 at Elland Road.

The Chelsea manager said Edouard Mendy cost his team with “a huge mistake” after he lost then ball to Brenden Aaronson for Leeds’ opener and rued the fact their second goal, scored by Rodrigo, came from a set-piece as he claimed his side were better.

And he said new signing Kalidou Koulibaly’s red card was unacceptable after the defender collected a second caution for tugging back substitute Joe Gelhardt.

Rich Jolly has the reaction from the earlier game where Leeds hammered Chelsea:

Half time latest score: Newcastle 2-1 Man City

The half ends with Schar needing attention after a collision with Stones but there’s no foul involved.

Joelinton also fouls Bernardo Silva for one final chance for City to deliver, but Dias heads over.

Half time, 2-1 to Newcastle after goals from Almiron and Wilson turned around that early Gundogan opener.

45’ - Newcastle 2-1 Man City

Haaland almost runs through but was probably offside anyway and the ball escapes him. Three minutes added on at the end of the half.

Walker has had a torrid first half and he gives away a silly corner now, under pressure from Joelinton.

Guardiola with a bit of work to do at the break, but if there’s any coach and team who can find a way back, it’s certainly this Man City side.

42’ - Newcastle 2-1 Man City

Crazy first half we’ve had here. City now just getting their foot back on the ball and playing it around at the back, getting themselves back in control after being blitzed repeatedly down the flanks here in this first half.

Absurdly, they could have scored about four themselves too - this hasn’t been poor exactly, but just very difficult to stop with Newcastle so, so invested in their gameplan.

GOAL! 38’ - Newcastle 2-1 Man City

What a turnaround! That left channel again for Newcastle - Saint-Maximin runs at Stones, passes to Wilson, his first touch sees him evade Dias and the second finish is an outside-of-the-boot finish past Ederson and into the corner!

Magpies ahead and it’s 2-1, a little over five minutes to the break.

36’ - Newcastle 1-1 Man City

Almost goals at both ends! Botman first with a horrid error, but then a very good recovery. A cross comes to the Dutch defender and his attempted header bounces straight to Gundogan who can rifle in a half-volley - but Botman has already stretched out a massive leg to stop the shot at close quarters.

Then a ball down the left channel again sees Almiron racing in, Ederson has come miles out of his area and Almiron touches it past him - but Cancelo has read the play brilliantly and makes a fine recovery tackle.

32’ - Newcastle 1-1 Man City

Man City look a bit shocked at the moment - they are unable to deal with the speed of Newcastle in attack down the flanks. They can, however, cause an awful lot of problems for the Magpies themselves - Foden almost gets in down the left, until Guimaraes comes over to block and help clear.

Rodrigo gets fed up with Saint-Maximin dribbling past everyone and produces a very cynical rake of the ankle. He’s a bit fortunate to escape a yellow there.

GOAL! 28’ - Newcastle 1-1 Man City

The goal stands!! One replay is all it took - Almiron was never offside from Saint-Maximin’s cross and the unmarked attacker was falling as he touches the ball in with his thigh, in past Ederson and it’s 1-1.

Fully deserved too after their response to falling behind.

Saint-Maximin excellent in the build-up.

27’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City

Another half-chance for Newcastle as Botman’s header off a corner reaches Wilson, but his snapshot is into the ground and saved. The offside flag goes up against him too actually.

Moments later Almiron flies in and bundles the ball into the back of the net - cue massive celebrations, but they are immediately cut short as the offside flag goes up!

26’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City

Newcastle really pushing for an equaliser here. Ederson is called into action to beat out a strike, Saint-Maximin firing in the effort after Dias’ lax pass is cut out. The home crowd roar in response to urge their team to continue the semi-onslaught.

Joelinton wins back possession again and Wilson curls in a strike - deflected wide.
