Amorim suggests he'd rather pick 63-year-old coach over Rashford

Manchester United spectacularly failed to win back-to-back Premier League games for the first time under Ruben Amorim as Crystal Palace secured an away victory at Old Trafford for the second season in a row thanks to a second-half double from Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Mateta pounced from two yards after Maxence Lacroix struck the crossbar with a header from Eberechi Eze’s free-kick, and the Frenchman doubled Palace’s lead in the 90th minute as Daniel Munoz squared to him for a simple finish after a swift counter-attack

It earned the Eagles a third win over United in their last four games and the result also took Oliver Glasner’s side into 12th, above United in the table.

Amorim experimented with a striker-less line-up, benching both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, as Kobbie Mainoo led the line. Although United started brightly, with Mainoo hitting the post, the plan did not work and Palace grew into the game.

Mateta, who went close in the first half when Andre Onana got a hand to his chip past the post, proved to be the central presence for Palace that United lacked and was in the right place to tap in from two yards after Lacroix’s header hit the crossbar.

United were rocked by the sight of Lisandro Martinez being stretchered off after appearing to twist his knee, before Mateta doubled Palace’s lead to the delight of the away fans in the corner of Old Trafford. Follow all the reaction and re-live the action below

FULL TIME! Manchester United 0-2 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace were excellent. Oliver Glasner’s side had an awful start to the season but they stayed calm and are now enjoying a wonderful run away from home.

In their last six Premier League away games, Palace have five wins and a draw - the best record of any Premier League team since the start of December!

And they continue their excellent recent record over United. With a second win in a row at Old Trafford, Palace have won three of the last four games against the Red Devils.

They are up to 12th in the table, above United.

FULL TIME! Manchester United 0-2 Crystal Palace

An absolutely atrocious day for Manchester United, even by their own standards. Ruben Amorim's strangest selection to date backfired. Crystal Palace were hugely deserving winners.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-2 Crystal Palace (MATETA 89')

DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR MATETA AND PALACE! ANOTHER WIN AT OLD TRAFFORD FOR THE EAGLES!

The visitors hit United on the break. It’s a wonderful run from Daniel Munoz, who is found by Sarr, and the full-back squares for Mateta. The Frenchman buries the chance and in a game where United started without a striker, Palace’s big man has won the game for them.

Manchester United 0-1 Crystal Palace

85 mins: It really doesn't get any better for United. Lisandro Martinez has been stretchered off. It remains to be seen how long he faces out of the side. They do at least have plenty of defenders now, with Heaven and Dorgu signed up. That, however, is scant consolation at the moment.

Manchester United 0-1 Crystal Palace

84 mins: Palace will be preparing for a lot of stoppage time and for United to lay siege on their goal. Marc Guehi wins a big header to clear Fernandes’ cross and Dean Henderson copes well with the inswinging corner, directed under his crossbar.
