Manchester United arrive in Switzerland knowing that a point against Basel will ensure they qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

It would also mean they are sure to win Group A, so Jose Mourinho will be keen to get a result and smooth their passage in the new year.

Basel are second in the group and will be determined to secure their place in the next round – and they history of beating United in European competition.

Match preview

In the build up to the game, Mourinho has played down talk of a rift with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

“The story is always the same. In some positions, when you don't have injuries, you have lots of options in other positions,” Mourinho said.

“In this moment, we have Pogba, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay.

“So I can imagine, next week, you are going to ask – why is this player not playing?

“Micki is not playing because we had lots of options for that match. I decided to play Marcus Rashford and Martial together.

“For many weeks, the question was – why do they not play together? Now, the question is why is Micki not playing.

“The answer is very simple – until the international board change the rules, I can only start with 11!”

What times does it start?

Basel vs Manchester United kicks off at 19:45 GMT.

Where can I watch it?

The game is live on BT Sport 2.

It’s a big game for…

Victor Lindelof. The centre back was on his backside when Newcastle scored on the weekend and has yet to establish himself but can make a statement by helping United secure their place in the next round.

5' - United almost create an early opening but Jesse Lingard's through ball to Anthony Martial is intercepted at the vital moment on the edge of the Basel penalty area after Romelu Lukaku's good knockdown.

9' - Not too many (well, not any) clear-cut chances to report on as we reach the 10-minute mark. Basel look very positive going forward but United undoubtedly have the pace on the counter-attack to hurt their opponents.

12' - Paul Pogba fizzes a superb ball into the feet of Romelu Lukaku, who is lucky not to be flagged offside. The Belgian striker's first touch is good but he dithers on the ball before his shot is saved by Tomas Vaclik.

Just moments later Marouane Fellaini almost gives United the lead but his header from Daley Blind's cross is cleared off the line by a Basel defender.

16' - Marouane Fellaini has another headed opportunity - again from a Daley Blind cross - but the United midfielder puts this one just wide.

23' - After a decent start by the Swiss champions United have been the dominant side over the last 15 minutes or so but they're yet to make the breakthrough. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, United's two wide men, have been on the periphery so far though and could do with getting a little more involved.

Celtic trail PSG

After taking a first-minute lead through Moussa Dembele in Paris, Celtic now trail the Ligue 1 leaders 3-1 after a couple of goals from Neymar and one from Edinson Cavani.

40' - Basel win a free-kick 30 yards from goal after a poor challenge by Paul Pogba. Dimitri Oberlin takes it for the hosts but sends the ball well over Sergio Romero's crossbar.

That's Basel's first shot of the match - a stat which highlights just how dominant the visitors have been.

42' - Off the post! Anthony Martial cuts in from the left before crossing for Marouane Fellaini, whose glancing header skims the outside of the far post.

44' - United are really turning the screw here. First Anthony Martial comes close to opening the scoring as his dinked left-footed effort from close range is turned behind for a corner by Tomas Vaclik.

The resulting corner bounces out to Marcos Rojo and his drilled effort from a stupendous distance cannons off the crossbar via a deflection.
