French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron has released a new statement on the attack: "We must not, in any way, give our assailants the impression that we are divided, that we are giving in to their tyranny. It's what they expect, and it's their trap."

A French prosecutor has said the identity of the Paris attacker who shot police has been verified. Police are still assessing whether he had accomplices and at least one location in the eastern Paris suburbs is being searched in connection with the attack.

The French Interior Ministry has said the attacker opened fire on a police car parked on the Champs-Elysees before he was shot dead.

French police asked people not to "spread any misinformation" that has not come from a "trusted source". Tourists have been warned to go back to their hotels and let family and friends know they are safe. France's Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve paid tribute to the officer and tweeted that his thoughts are with the family.
