John Lewis Christmas advert 2019

When it comes to Christmas adverts, there is no denying that year upon year John Lewis delivers the most highly-anticipated festive campaign, and 2019 is no exception.

While last year’s sentimental advert told the tale of Elton John’s life and career, from receiving a piano as a gift in his childhood to performing his music to sold-out stadiums, the retailer's latest offering follows an excitable dragon called Edgar and his best friend Ava.

This year John Lewis & Partners has shaken things up by collaborating with Waitrose & Partners to launch a joint Christmas advert for the very first time.

Previous tear-jerking campaigns have included “The Journey”, which followed a snowman as he sought his long-lost love, and “The Man on the Moon”, which depicted an elderly lonely man in solitude on the moon.

Several brands have already released their Christmas adverts this year, including Sainsbury's, Boots and Amazon. The Amazon ad was particularly well-received, depicting a Love Actually-style story with singing delivery boxes.

The other day, eagle-eyed Twitter users spotted a 10-second video on the social media platform, featuring a peculiarly-shaped doorknob.

The tweet read: "Meet Edgar. 14.11.19 #ExcitableEdgar."

This prompted some to assume the teaser video has something to do with John Lewis' Christmas campaign.

Last year's John Lewis advert was a heartfelt tribute to Elton John, depicting him at various stages of his life.

The short film showed a young Elton John receiving a piano as a gift for Christmas during his childhood.

The advert was titled "The Boy and the Piano" and transported viewers as they watched John's journey to stardom.

Sainsbury's launched its Christmas 2019 advert earlier this week.

The supermarket paid homage to its roots with a short film that tells the tale of a young chimney sweep called Nicholas, who is wrongfully accused of stealing a clementine from a Sainsbury’s stall in Dickensian London.
