Tyler, the Creator delivered a sharp, varied and spectacular headline set on the Saturday night of this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2024, joined by guests including Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino), A$AP Rocky, Charlie Wilson and Kali Uchs.
Earlier, No Doubt’s first show in nine years saw a special guest appearance from Olivia Rodrigo, Paris Hilton played cornhole with Vampire Weekend and Grimes suffered “major technical difficulties”.
On the opening Friday night of the festival, Lana Del Rey was joined by Billie Eilish and Jon Batiste during her rapturously received and beautifully staged headline performance.
Earlier in the day there had been performances from rising Mexican singer Peso Pluma, rapper Lil Uzi Vert, French dance act Justice and a history-making set from K-pop boyband Ateez. Shakira made a surprise appearance during DJ Bizarrap’s set, and announced a new world tour while she was there.
Doja Cat is set to close the festival tonight. The second weekend will take place from Friday 19 April to Sunday 21 April, with the same artists performing at both events.
Asides from its reputation for drawing influencers, many celebrities have been known to attend the event over the years, with Vanessa Hudgens being unofficially dubbed the Queen of Coachella. This year, even power couple Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have made the trip out to the desert - clearly not put off by reports of ridiculous traffic jams and overpriced burritos.
The festival also includes some must-see art installations, food and drink, and immersive experiences for ticket holders, which you can read about here.
Yee haw! Is Beyoncé to blame for Coachella going cowboy-core?
Just weeks after the release of Beyoncé’s acclaimed country album Cowboy Carter, Coachella is filling up with dedicated followers of fashion kitted out as if they’re off to the rodeo. Coincidence? We think not.
Barry Keoghan was on camera duty at Sabrina Carpenter
Saltburn star Barry Keoghan has enjoyed a breakout year, and he’s now widely rumoured to be dating Sabrina Carpenter.
Eagle-eyed fans spotted the Irish actor down the front for her Coachella set, and captured him filming Carpenter while looking altogether smitten.
Lil Uzi Vert leaves fans breathless with hit-packed set
Philadelphia-born rapper Lil Uzi Vert brought a huge crowd to the main Coachella stage on Friday evening, delivering hits including “Do What I Want” and “The Way Life Goes” and coquettishly telling the massed audience he’s got a secret to tell them. “I think you might already know... I love you, and I hope you love me too.” The screams of “Uzi” he gets in response leave him in no doubt about that one.
British DJs Anti Up have a license to print money
In advance of their headline set on the Mojave stage tonight, British DJ duo Anti Up have been distributing their very own $100 bills. The Independent’s team on the ground captured the below image - but no news yet as to whether they’re legal tender at the festival’s famously overpriced food tents...
Shakira makes surprise appearance with Bizarrap
Colombian superstar Shakira has made a surprise appearance at Coachella, rising up on an elevated platform behind Argentine DJ Bizarrap in a firey dress and oversized aviator shades.
The pair performed their hits “La Fuerte” and “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”
Shakira also took the opportunity to announce her first world tour since 2017.
Peso Pluma joined by Becky G after memorable Coachella stage introduction
Last year, California-born Becky G brought rising Mexican star Peso Pluma out to join her during her set on Coachella’s main stage, so there’s a nice full-circle element to her coming out tonight to make a guest appearance during his packed show:
That came after Peso himself had emerged in suitably epic fashion:
Honey Dijon x Green Velvet bring “phenomenal visuals” to Quasar stage
Chicago-born DJs Honey Dijon and Green Velvet are going back-to-back on the Quasar stage, and The Independent’s man-on-the-ground Matthew Cooper reports that the pair have brought “phenomenal visuals”. Here’s a taste:
Suki Waterhouse brings her ‘Moves’ to the Gobi stage
Suki Waterhouse, who just weeks ago gave birth to her first child with Robert Pattinson, tells the Gobi stage audience that it feels surreal to be on stage. “I just don’t even believe that this is reality right now,” she tells the crowd. Considering she played a fictional rock star in Daisy Jones And The Six, she can probably be forgiven for questioning what’s fact and what’s fiction right now. After opening with the infectious “Moves”, she goes straight into recent single “My Fun”.
All eyes on Ateez
Dedicated fans have been camped out all day patiently waiting for the appearance of Ateez, who make history as the first K-pop boy band to ever take the stage at Coachella. Their reception of the Sahara stage is suitably raucous given the history-making occasion:
