Oscars 2018: Gary Oldman wins Best Actor award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour

He dedicated the award to his 98-year-old mother adding: 'Thank you for your love and support. Put the kettle on. I'm bringing Oscar home'

Gary Oldman has won the award for Best Actor at the 2018 Oscars.

He wins for Darkest Hour, directed by Joe Wright, which sees him transform into Winston Churchill to tell the story of the opening days of World War II; as Nazi Germany advanced into Western Europe, Churchill and his cabinet faced conflict over the decision as to whether the United Kingdom should attempt to make peace or prepare for war.

Fellow nominees were Timothée Chalamet for Call Me By Your Name, Daniel Day-Lewis for Phantom Thread, Denzel Washington for Roman J. Israel, Esq., and Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out.

Oldman has one previous nomination, for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2012.

He dedicated the award to his 98-year-old mother, adding: "Thank you for your love and support. Put the kettle on. I'm bringing Oscar home."
