Oscars 2018: Frances McDormand uses acceptance speech to demand inclusion rider from Hollywood

Frances McDormand has won the award for Best Actress at the 2018 Oscars.

She wins for Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, directed by Martin McDonagh. McDormand plays Mildred Hayes in the film, the woman behind the titular billboards; erected out a grieving rage over the lack of progress in the investigation into the brutal assault and murder of her daughter.

Fellow nominees were Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water, Margot Robbie for I, Tonya, Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird, and Meryl Streep for The Post.

McDormand previously won Best Actress for Fargo in 1997. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Mississippi Burning in 1989, Almost Famous in 2001, and North Country in 2006.

"We are a bunch of hooligans and anarchists, but we do clean up nice," she began, honouring McDonagh. She then asked all of the female nominees in the room to stand up and be applauded for their work.

"We all have stories to tell and projects to finance," she continued, before ending with: "I have two words to leave with you tonight: Inclusion Rider." The term refers to when top line cast and crew make it part of their contract to hire a diverse crew around them.
