US Open betting tips:
The world’s best players will descend upon New York to vie for glory in the US Open next week.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will be surging with confidence following his emphatic victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final earlier this summer.
However, Serbian superstar Djokovic gained a measure of revenge by beating Alcaraz in the final of the Cincinnati Open on Sunday.
Djokovic celebrated by ripping off his shirt, tipping his head back and roaring with excitement at the end of an epic match that lasted almost four hours.
The best betting sites now make Djokovic the narrow favourite to clinch a 24th grand slam title at the US Open.
If he can pull it off, he will move level with Margaret Court as the joint-most decorated player in tennis history.
However, Alcaraz will be determined to return to winning ways in Queens, while fellow young guns such as Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz also look dangerous.
It promises to be a fascinating tournament and we have broken down our top tips on the US Open men’s singles event below.
Expect a final showdown between Djokovic and Alcaraz
Alcaraz and Djokovic are now firmly entrenched as the top two players in the ATP world rankings, well clear of world No 3 Daniil Medvedev.
They will be the top two seeds at the US Open which will leave them on opposite ends of the draw this year.
That paves the way for yet another epic final showdown between these elite players as it’s hard to see anyone stopping them right now.
Last year, Djokovic was unable to compete in the US Open after refusing to take a Covid-19 vaccine.
That opened the door for a member of the next generation to seize glory in New York and Alcaraz grasped the opportunity with both hands.
Up until that point, the Spanish youngster was primarily seen as a clay court specialist with the potential to take on Rafa Nadal’s mantle at the French Open.
However, he proved that he can also thrive on hardcourts by sweeping aside Andrey Rublev, Frances Tiafoe and Casper Ruud to claim the crown.
Alcaraz then suffered a comprehensive defeat to Djokovic at the French Open earlier this summer, suggesting that the veteran Serb was still the top dog in the men’s game.
But Alcaraz then stunned everyone by outlasting Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, prevailing in an epic five-set encounter.
It felt like a symbolic changing of the guard, as Alcaraz – who only turned 20 in May – vanquished his 36-year-old opponent.
Djokovic appeared resurgent in Cincinnati though and he will be determined to cement his legacy by winning another grand slam in New York, so it seems like a coin toss between these two players.
As the tournament approaches, some online bookmakers will release odds on a “Name the Finalists” market and backing Alcaraz-Djokovic could be a great option.
Back Djokovic to gain sweet revenge in New York
Djokovic will draw a great deal of encouragement from the nature of his victory over Alcaraz in Ohio on Sunday.
He lost the first set 7-5 and he then appeared to be in real trouble after the young Spaniard broke his serve in the second.
However, Djokovic displayed great mental fortitude as he rallied to win the second and third sets via tie-breaks.
He had to save a championship point en route to victory, so he can be excused for the wild nature of his celebrations after clinching a 39th ATP Masters 1000 title.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz was left in tears as he slumped into his chair at the end of the gruelling match, played out in 35-degree heat.
It suggested that there is still life in the old dog and it could inspire Djokovic to victory when he heads to the Big Apple.
Some UK bookmakers are offering identical odds on either man to lift the trophy, but Alcaraz is the 5/4 favourite at William Hill and Djokovic is a slight underdog at 6/4.
Those odds on Djokovic appear inviting when you consider how dominant he has been on hardcourt over the past decade.
Tip: Novak Djokovic to win – 6/4 with William Hill
Sinner could go deep into this tournament
Jannik Sinner looks like the player with the best chance of breaking the Alcaraz-Djokovic duopoly at this tournament.
He stormed to victory at the National Bank Open in Toronto on 13 August, which augurs well for his chances in the US Open.
The 22-year-old Italian faced a dangerous opponent in Alex de Minaur in the final, but he eased to a 6-4 6-1 victory.
Sinner flopped in Cincinnati but the world No 6 should emerge revitalised for the US Open.
He was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon earlier this summer and he reached the quarter-finals of the US Open last year.
A bet on him making it through to the semi-finals of this tournament could pay dividends, while he is also a decent each-way shout at 11/1 with Bet365.
