England vs Chile betting tips:
- England to win by 41-45 points - 15/2 with Betway
- First half to be the highest scoring half - 13/10 with bet365
Having released the pressure on themselves with back-to-back wins over Argentina and Japan, England will look to make it three from three in Pool D of the Rugby World Cup against Chile at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille on Saturday (4.45pm UK time).
Coming into the tournament with just three victories from nine tests since Steve Borthwick replaced Eddie Jones as head coach at the end of last year, there was uncertainty from bookmakers as to how the English were going to fare in the 10th edition of the RWC.
While the common consensus is that they are on the favourable side of the draw, the Argentinians and the Japanese were potential banana skins for the 2003 champions.
Yet the boot of George Ford inspired them towards a 27-10 triumph against the former, before 21 unanswered points helped England to claim a 34-12 win at the expense of Japan in Nice last Sunday.
Courtesy of tries from Lewis Ludlam, Courtney Lawes, Freddie Steward and Joe Marchant, a bonus point was also secured.
Contrasting fortunes for England and Chile at RWC
England are at the summit of the pool table, a full nine points clear of their upcoming opponents. First-time finalists at the World Cup, Chile were on the receiving end of a 42-12 reversal to Japan in their tournament debut at Stadium de Toulouse on 10 September.
Six days later in Bordeaux, Samoa emerged triumphant over the Chileans with a similar final scoreline of 43-10.
It was always going to be a big ask of Pablo Lemoine’s side to come out on top in these games, especially as they had never previously faced Japan or Samoa in an international test.
This is also the case with England as well as Argentina, who they face in their final pool game in Nantes on 30 September.
Meanwhile, in the latest Rugby World Cup odds, England have moved in from 16/1 to 12/1 outsiders following their positive start.
England clear favourites for a third successive win
Given their status as four-time World Cup finalists (and one-time winners) is in stark contrast to the novice tag that is applied to Chile, England are overwhelming favourites to prevail on Saturday – even if the personnel is radically different to their opening two games.
The best odds available on Borthwick’s men is William Hill's price of 1/250, but most rugby betting sites go as short as 1/1000, a measure of how much of a formality the result is.
Should anyone wish to punt on Chile causing one of the biggest upsets in sporting history, then you can get 80/1 on them winning with BoyleSports, but it's not a bet we would advise.
Big winning margin expected from England
Of course, the big question on everyone’s lips ahead of this fixture is just how much England are going to win by?
Regardless of how Borthwick chooses to approach the game – whether he will go for a power-based approach or one that plays more to the strengths of his backs – it is anticipated they will be able register a plethora of tries.
Chances are they will be able to surpass the 33-point winning margin that Samoa enjoyed over Chile the last day out.
A victory of between 41 and 45 points seems plausible and Betway are offering 15/2 on this scenario playing itself out.
Tip: England to win by 41-45 points – 15/2 with Betway
England vs Chile could have high-scoring opening half
In games of this nature, generally the underdog puts it up to their high-ranking opponents for large spells until the class and fitness of the favourites eventually shines through.
This could well be the case, but England may want to set out their stall early and find themselves in a position where they can unload their bench as early as possible.
Trying to keep a squad of 33 players happy can be quite a task during a tournament and Borthwick will be hopeful of giving his troops ample game time on Saturday.
They will want to put this one to bed early doors and for that reason our second betting tip on England vs Chile is the 13/10 with bet365 on the first period being the highest-scoring half.
Tip: First half to be the highest scoring half – 13/10 with bet365
