FedEx St Jude Championship betting tips:
- Scottie Scheffler to win - 6/1 with BetUK
- Jason Day to finish in the top 20 - Evens with Betway
- Tyrrell Hatton to be the top Englishman - 9/4 with Betgoodwin
Betting sites are throwing their weight behind Scottie Scheffler winning the FedEx St Jude Championship this weekend (6pm Thursday, Sky Sports Golf), with even Rory McIlroy’s odds being pushed out wider than expected.
Scheffler has the form and ranking to nail the TPC Southwind course and drive towards an important victory in this first of three FedEx playoffs.
Rarely does one player carry such low odds heading into a tournament, but that’s where UK bookmakers reckon the trophy is heading.
Southwind is a bit of a horrible golf course. It rewards pinpoint precision and its many bunkers, water hazards and messy roughs are just waiting to eat up golf balls.
There isn’t much choice in what shots you play here - just follow the course and hope your range and accuracy keeps you out of trouble.
Even course leaders can find it difficult and in recent years the competition has delivered some enthralling playoffs, where players have simply crashed out following one bad decision.
Here are three tips to consider heading into the FedEx St Jude Championship.
Back Scottie Scheffler To Win
It might sound a little boring backing the world No 1 and favourite to win most tournaments, but Scottie Scheffler is right where he needs to be to claim victory here.
The 27-year-old didn’t have the best of Opens this summer but it’s time for him to get back to winning trophies, having not won a tournament since March.
As mentioned above, Southwind rewards consistency and Scheffler is a man who can deliver. His dead-eye, sometimes emotionless golf will help him here.
A professional, consistent four rounds is what we’re after and Scheffler has made a bogey or worse in just 10.7 per cent of his holes this season.
New betting sites have him at 6/1 to win here. Those odds are shorter than what Scheffler was priced to win any of this year’s majors.
However, there’s also a big leap between him and joint-second favourites Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy (both 9/1). The bookies evidently believe this will be Scheffler’s tournament.
Tip: Scottie Scheffler to win - 11/10 with BetUK
Bet on Day to make the top 20
Jason Day has endured a bit of a strange 2023 but is due an uptick in results as we begin the FedEx playoffs.
Day’s last trophy came in May when he ended a five-year wait to win a PGA Tour tournament.
He missed the cut at his next three outings - including the PGA Championship and US Open - only to finish tied-second at The Open last month.
Day therefore comes into Southwind on the back of some much-needed form. He’ll need to rely on that to carry him through the first two days on a deadly, unforgiving course.
But, if the Australian shows the discipline that got him over four rounds of Royal Liverpool then there’s no reason why he can’t challenge here.
Unibet have Day at 35/1 to win the St Jude Championship. That feels unlikely, but a price of Evens on him to finish in the top 20 feels more realistic.
It’s a far more conservative bet but given Day’s last outing it looks a far better play.
Tip: Jason Day to finish in the top 20 - Evens with Betway
Hatton To Finish Top Englishman
Southwind rewards players who don’t take risks but who instead stick to the playbook and hit their shots.
Tyrrell Hatton is the ideal golfer here, after he was rewarded for his conservative play with an £800,000 cheque earlier this week.
The winner of the oddly named 2022-2023 Aon Risk Reward Challenge, Hatton was singled out for his ability to hit the greens on 82 per cent of his approach shots, and nail birdie chances when they arose.
That doesn’t come as much of a surprise as Hatton is an excellent golfer. His consistency though, hasn’t yielded any tournament victories in the last two years - and Southwind might be a stretch too far.
However, bookmakers have him as the 9/4 favourite to be the highest-ranked Englishman in Tennessee.
He’s up against Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose and Aaron Rai for that honour, but Fleetwood feels like the only true challenger to Hatton here.
Tip: Tyrrell Hatton to be the top Englishman to score anytime - 9/4 with Betgoodwin
