Newcastle United will be seeking to return to winning ways when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday (5.30pm, Sky Sports).
The Magpies suffered a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday, but they are on a fine run of form domestically.
Wolves are not to be underestimated, though, and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will expect a tough match at Molineux.
The football betting sites have Newcastle down as favourites as they attempt to close the gap to the top four.
Extra preparation time could be key
Gary O’Neil gave a fascinating insight into his pre-match preparations on Sky Sports earlier this week.
Mastering the tactical detail is a prerequisite for Premier League managers these days, and it was intriguing to get a glimpse behind the curtain courtesy of the Wolves boss.
Preparation time could be a factor in determining the outcome of this weekend’s clash in the Black Country.
There are two challenges that come with balancing European and domestic commitments, something that this Newcastle squad is still getting to grips with.
The most obvious is an increase in physical output and the reduced time for rest and recovery. But equally significant is the fact that coaches have less time to get ready for any given fixture.
Indeed, whereas Wolves have been working on their tactics for this game all week, Newcastle had to concentrate on Dortmund ahead of Wednesday’s game.
Home advantage is another factor in Wolves’ favour. They beat Manchester City in their last game at Molineux and previously delivered an excellent performance at home to Liverpool, at least in the first half.
Wolves may be undervalued by UK betting sites and have what it takes to pick up a positive result.
Goals could be in short supply on Saturday
Wolves’ main problem before this season was putting the ball in the back of the net. No team in the Premier League scored fewer goals last term.
Wolves sit joint-11th for goals this time around, while Newcastle are right at the top of that ranking after finding the back of the net 24 times in their nine matches to date.
Eight of those strikes came in a mauling of Sheffield United last month, but Newcastle also hit four past Crystal Palace last weekend, while they have scored at least twice in four consecutive Premier League games.
Still, the lesson from the Borussia Dortmund defeat is that Newcastle are not always as effective when they are given a larger share of possession.
Wolves will bear that in mind on Saturday. Newcastle are lethal in transition - witness their fourth goal against Palace last time out - so denying them space to break into will be key.
If O’Neil can strike the right balance, this could be a frustrating evening for the Magpies, especially if there is a lingering tiredness from their midweek exertions.
Neto can continue fantastic start to season
O’Neil described Pedro Neto as “incredible” on Monday Night Football, praising his “massive quality” and his work ethic.
After a difficult couple of years with injury, Neto is back to his best. Still only 23, the Portuguese has a bright future ahead of him.
Neto is already being linked with a move away from Wolverhampton, but for now he is committed to the cause at Molineux.
No player has provided more assists than Neto so far this season. He has set up six goals in total, including one in the 2-1 defeat of Bournemouth in gameweek eight.
Meanwhile Neto ranks fourth in the division for chances created, behind only James Maddison, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Fernandes.
It could be worth following the Portuguese forward to boost his assist tally when Newcastle come to town.
