Frank Lampard is the favourite to be the next Rangers manager following last weekend's dismissal of Michael Beale.
Beale was dismissed following a 3-1 home defeat by Aberdeen, the club’s third defeat in their opening seven Scottish Premiership games.
He also failed to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, a major contributing factor to Beale lasting just 10 months in the job.
Former Chelsea and Everton boss Lampard has subsequently had his odds to be next Rangers manager cut from 20/1 to 4/7 with William Hill.
That makes him the clear favourite with betting sites ahead of Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat.
Next Rangers manager odds
- Frank Lampard – 4/7
- Philippe Clement – 5/1
- Kevin Muscat – 8/1
- Pascal Jansen – 10/1
- Steven Davis – 16/1
- Derek McInnes – 16/1
- Graham Potter – 33/1
Muscat – who played for Rangers in their 2002/03 campaign – had previously been the frontrunner having performed admirably in his current role as manager of Yokohoma F. Marinos.
He won the J1 League title in 2022 and the 2023 Japanese Super Cup, which appears to have caught the eye of his former club.
Much like former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglu – who has impressed in the Premier League since taking over at Tottenham – 50-year-old Muscat has honed his skill in his homeland of Australia as well as Japan’s top tier.
However, a big potential stumbling block is the current state of play in the J1 League, with Yokohoma F. Marino locked in another title race with five games to play.
The Japanese league season does not end until 3 December and it’s unclear is Muscat would be willing to abandon the chance to win back-to-back titles in favour of potentially assuming the Rangers role.
As such, he has drifted out from an early favourite to an 8/1 chance on football betting sites.
That has allowed free agent Lampard to steal a march in the race, though the former England midfielder faces tough competition from Clement who is also unattached since leaving Monaco in June.
Alternative names linked with Rangers job
Another name supposedly in the hat is Pascal Jansen, the highly-rated Dutch coach who is currently sitting second in the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar after guiding them to six wins in their first seven league games this season.
There are other potential candidates who would be more familiar to the average Rangers fan, with Steven Davis and Derek McInnes considered 16/1 outsiders apiece.
Although technically still part of the playing staff, club legend Davis has been tasked with steering the ship until the upcoming international break and he is being assisted by Alex Rae and Steven Smith.
Davis, 38, is a fans’ favourite, but his chances were not helped by a 2-1 defeat against Cypriot side Aris Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday.
McInnes, meanwhile, is also rumoured to be on Rangers’ radar having impressed in charge of Kilmarnock of late. The former Rangers player also enjoyed a successful eight-year stint in charge of Aberdeen and was recently labelled an “outstanding manager” by Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.
The 52-year-old’s stock is high, but his long odds may be reflective of the fact McInnes turned down the chance to become Rangers manager when last approached in 2017.
