Manchester United have the opportunity to build some momentum with a win over Crystal Palace in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third round clash.
Erik ten Hag’s team claimed a much-needed victory over Burnley on Saturday as Bruno Fernandes’ stunning volley gave United all three points after suffering three successive defeats to Arsenal, Brighton and Bayern Munich.
Crystal Palace also need a win to ease growing doubts about the Eagles’ early-season form – Roy Hodgson’s team have scored just one goal in their last two games. A run in the Carabao Cup would be welcome.
Football betting sites have priced United as the favourites to make the next round of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Hodgson’s Palace.
Man Utd vs Palace betting: Hojlund to score
Rasmus Hojlund’s signing from Atalanta has given Ten Hag a new centre-forward to work with and the Danish international has made a good start to life as a United player.
Hojlund scored his first Manchester United goal in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich last week, but he has yet to score in front of his own fans at Old Trafford. That could change against the Eagles in the Carabao Cup.
After missing the first few games of the season through injury, Hojlund has looked sharper with every match he has played. Bookmakers price him at 8/5 to score against Crystal Palace.
Ten Hag might rotate other areas of his team for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third round match, but it’s likely he will want Hojlund to get as much game time under his belt as possible.
Tip: Rasmus Hojlund anytime goalscorer – 8/5 with William Hill
EFL Cup third round to be cagey affair
United are still finding their groove this season and their struggles in home matches have reflected a lot of their biggest problems.
Ten Hag’s team suffered a damaging 3-1 defeat to Brighton in their last match at Old Trafford. Before that, United fought back from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 and laboured to an unconvincing 1-0 win over Wolves on the opening weekend.
Antony and Jadon Sancho are still missing for United with Mason Mount believed to be some way short of full fitness. Ten Hag might have to use the same frontline that claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday.
United have failed to score more than one goal in two of their three home matches this season and bookies have priced them at 11/8 to score under 1.5 goals. The form guide points to this being a tight encounter.
Tip: Man Utd to score under 1.5 goals – 11/10 with BetGoodwin
Palace fade after the restart
Four of the five goals Manchester United have scored in home matches this season (against Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Brighton) have come in the second half.
Ten Hag’s team have generally struggled in the first half of matches this season and with a place in the next round of the Carabao Cup on the line United might be stodgy in their approach against Palace.
United are averaging 15 shots per game this season, ranking them seventh among the Premier League’s 20 teams. They are 11th for shots on target per game in the Premier League this season.
On top of this, six of the last seven goals conceded by Crystal Palace in all competitions have come in the second half of matches. Recent form points to this Carabao Cup third round tie being decided after half time.
United are priced at 15/4 to be level at half time, but ultimately win against Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.
