- Man City to win, most corners Man City, most cards Sevilla – 37/20 with BetUK
Manchester City will bid to add another piece of silverware to their bulging trophy cabinet when they face Sevilla in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday.
Pep Guardiola’s men clinched a famous treble when they beat Inter Milan in the Champions League final in May.
They will now compete in the Uefa Super Cup, which pits the Champions League winners against the Europa League winners each year.
City looked back to their brilliant best when they eased to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Burnley on Friday night.
UK betting sites responded by making them the odds-on favourites to beat Sevilla, who suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Valencia on the same evening.
City will be missing key playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, who limped off with a hamstring injury in the opening stages of that game at Turf Moor.
However, they should still have more than enough creativity and firepower within their ranks to get the job done.
There is not much value on offer by betting on a straight City win but we have unearthed a few intriguing bets on this match, which are laid out below.
Back Man City to outclass Sevilla
City reminded everyone of their quality by sweeping Burnley aside in the opening game of the new Premier League season.
Erling Haaland stole the show by scoring twice in the opening 36 minutes and Rodri’s strike wrapped up a comfortable win after the break.
Guardiola’s men enjoyed 66 per cent of the possession and they only allowed the Clarets to register a single shot on target, which was comfortably saved by Ederson.
It was an ominous performance from the reigning European champions and it does not bode well for Sevilla’s chances of winning this game.
Over in Spain, José Luis Mendilibar’s side slumped to a 2-1 home defeat against Valencia on Friday evening.
Their cause was not helped by a late red card for Loïc Badé, but their defending was inept for large portions of the game.
They were unbeaten in nine previous matches against Valencia, so fans may have expected a strong start to the season, but Sevilla underperformed in all departments.
It suggested that they could be in line for another season of mid-table mediocrity and they look vastly inferior to City in terms of technical ability, desire and physical fitness.
City are missing a few players through injury, as John Stones and Ruben Dias are also sidelined, but they have a large enough squad to cope.
The likes of Rodri, Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic should dominate possession and Haaland has the pace, movement and finishing ability to put Sevilla to the sword.
The Champions League winners have won nine of the last 10 Uefa Super Cup matches, including Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt last year.
City should also be able to cover a 1.5-goal handicap against Sevilla if they play close to their full potential on Wednesday.
Tip: Man City -1.5 – 10/11 with William Hill
Haaland could terrorise Sevilla’s lacklustre defence
Sevilla had the best defensive record in La Liga in the 2021/22 season – just 30 goals conceded in 38 games – which helped them secure a top-four finish.
They then sold Jules Koundé to Barcelona and Diego Carlos to Aston Villa last summer and their league form predictably nosedived.
Los Rojiblancos conceded 54 goals last season and they only finished nine points clear of the drop zone.
They flirted with relegation for most of the campaign and things only improved after Mendilibar replaced Jorge Sampaoli in the dugout with two months remaining.
Their victory over Roma in the Europa League final lightened the mood but they are now winless in their last five league matches and the defence continues to leak goals.
Haaland should be licking his lips in anticipation of this game and he should have little trouble in getting on the scoresheet. Despite the likelihood of Haaland scoring, he’s reasonably priced on football betting sites.
Tip: Erling Haaland to score – 4/6 with Bet365
A tempting bet builder at BetUK
At Bet UK, one of the best new betting sites, you can grab cumulative odds of 37/20 by combining City to win, City to earn the most corners and Sevilla to be shown the most cards.
City should win plenty of corners in this match as they will surely enjoy the lion’s share of possession, regularly testing the Sevilla goalkeeper and playing balls into the box for Haaland to attack.
They did not receive a single card in their 3-0 win against Burnley at the weekend, whereas Sevilla were shown three yellows and a red card in their defeat to Valencia.
Los Rojiblancos are a fiery bunch, as they proved in the Europa League final and the tackles could come flying in on Wednesday, so that bet builder looks plausible.
