After the chaos which engulfed Liverpool in their 2-1 loss at Tottenham last weekend, Jurgen Klopp would likely have preferred an easier fixture than having to travel to Brighton on Sunday (2pm, Sky Sports).
The AMEX Stadium was the scene of one of the Reds’ worst performances last season, when they barely laid a glove on the Seagulls in a 3-0 defeat.
To compound their misery, Liverpool were then knocked out of the FA Cup at Brighton too, with Kaoru Mitoma’s injury-time goal proving decisive.
Despite Roberto De Zerbi’s side also getting a 3-3 draw at Anfield in his first match in charge, football betting sites make the Reds favourites for this match. With the sides only separated by a point in the league table, this fixture is tough to predict.
Brighton vs Liverpool tips: Goals galore?
In the latest Premier League odds, Liverpool are 1/3 for a top four finish while Brighton are also considered contenders at 11/4.
Forecasting the outcome of this meeting is made more difficult by both teams having a quick turnaround from their Europa League matches on Thursday.
Liverpool beat Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 in a low-key game at Anfield while Brighton fought back from 2-0 down to draw in Marseille.
Although the Reds are more well versed in dealing with the treadmill nature of playing European football, the Seagulls have home advantage here.
And while it seems clear Liverpool have improved significantly since last season, they have only won six of their last 23 away matches in the Premier League.
Their two successes in 2023/24 saw them come from behind but Brighton may not be as generous as Wolves or Newcastle were.
All three meetings in 2022/23 saw at least three goals and both teams scored in two of them. The same has been true for every league match Brighton have played so far this season, with Liverpool joint-second in the league for this stat having seen it occur five times.
The one question mark over the idea of goals galore is that the Reds’ defence has been strong when they have had 11 men on the field. Liverpool have been putting up title-challenging expected goals numbers until they lose a player or two and that can’t keep happening.
But they aren’t keeping many clean sheets either. There could be at least one goal for both teams here and we predict at least three in total.
Tip: Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 goals – 8/15 with bet365
Salah to continue spectacular south coast form
With Diogo Jota suspended – even though a Premier League panel has since ruled he should not have been sent off at Tottenham – and Cody Gakpo out for a few weeks with an injury, the Liverpool front line pretty much picks itself.
The trio in question have all made decent starts to the season. Darwin Nunez has made just four starts but has already accumulated four goals, including a match-turning brace at St James’ Park.
Luis Diaz has found the net three times and it would have been four were it not for an almighty error from the VAR team last weekend.
The bookmakers inevitably favour Mohamed Salah though, and not just because he already has four in both the goals and assists columns so far this term.
There’s something about the English south coast which must appeal to him as he has made 17 goal contributions in 15 games at Bournemouth, Southampton and Brighton.
Only against Manchester United (14) and West Ham (13) has Salah amassed more Premier League goals and assists than he has against the Seagulls (12). With the Brighton backline far from watertight, Liverpool’s number 11 could add another goal to his already impressive tally here.
Tip: Mohamed Salah to score anytime – 8/5 with William Hill
All eyes on Anthony Taylor
After what happened at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend, the scrutiny upon Anthony Taylor here will be enormous, although when isn’t there pressure on a Premier League referee?
Taylor may have to show plenty of cards as the rate of bookings in Brighton’s games has gone through the roof this season.
Every single Brighton league match has featured at least four yellow cards, four of the games have seen six or more and there were nine bookings and a red card when they won at Wolves in August.
It has been a similar story for Taylor, who showed 10 yellow cards and sent off Rodri when Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest two weeks ago. This game may not reach those, but over 4.5 cards seems plausible.
