Celtic's hopes of European football after Christmas hang in the balance as they get to renew hostilities with Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital on Tuesday.
The Hoops held Atletico Madrid to a 2-2 draw in last month’s Champions League meeting in Glasgow as they picked up their first point of the group stage.
That's given the Scottish champions’ just a glimmer of hope of reaching the Champions League’s last 16, or the knockout rounds of the Europa League, but they need something from Tuesday’s match to stand any realistic chance of continental football in the new year.
Atleti, meanwhile, are still unbeaten in this season’s Champions League and are edging closer to qualifying for the last 16.
Football betting sites have priced Atletico Madrid as the favourites, but Celtic could cause them problems once again.
Griezmann to get amongst the goals
Antoine Griezmann has enjoyed an excellent 2023/24 season with the 32-year-old already boasting nine goals in just 14 games in La Liga and the Champions League.
Griezmann found the back of the net in last month’s meeting at Celtic Park and is the favourite with new betting sites to score any time again on Tuesday night.
Diego Simeone has harnessed Griezmann as his one-man attacking hub this season with the Frenchman being Atleti’s most reliable creator and finisher. He is in the form of his life at the moment.
While Celtic carried a threat of their own against the Spanish club in Glasgow a fortnight ago, they frequently struggled with the pace and movement of Griezmann and Alvaro Morata in the attacking third.
There is the potential for Griezmann to score from open play, but the French international is also Atletico Madrid’s first-choice penalty kick taker.
With our first bet after looking at the Champions League odds, we're backing Griezmann to score any time at 6/5 with bet365.
Atletico Madrid vs Celtic Tip 1: Antoine Griezmann any time goalscorer - 6/5 at bet365
Atletico’s quality to shine through after half time
Last month’s clash between Celtic and Atletico Madrid was a whirlwind encounter that saw the match swing back and forth over the course of 90 minutes.
However, Atleti were the stronger of the two teams in the second half, even after they went down to 10 men following the red card shown to Rodrigo de Paul.
Celtic have lost the second half in each of their last seven Champions League matches
This suggests Brendan Rodgers’ men don’t have the fitness levels to stick with elite level opponents for the duration of matches. They have a habit of fading away.
Being the home team, the onus will be on Atletico Madrid to dictate the pace and tempo of Tuesday night’s match.
Atletico Madrid vs Celtic Tip 2: Atletico Madrid to win second half - 8/13 at BetGoodwin
Atleti to make attacking quality count
Under Simeone, Atletico have had a reputation for being a conservative and compact team. They traditionally focus on the defensive aspects of the game over the attacking side.
This season, though, Atleti have played on the front foot, as demonstrated by their home record in all competitions - they have scored two or more goals in all six of the matches in front of their own supporters.
Atleti have scored three goals in four of those six matches and will fancy their chances of continuing their strong scoring run against a Celtic team that has conceded six goals in three Champions League matches.
Between Griezmann, Morata, Angel Correa and Marcos Llorente, Atletico Madrid have the attacking talent to do some real damage, opening up the possibilities for goal markets with bookmakers.
We're backing them to score at least three goals with BetVictor at 6/5.
Atletico Madrid vs Celtic Tip 3: Atletico Madrid over 2.5 goals - 6/5 at BetVictor
O’Riley to take aim from long-range
Matt O’Riley has scored six goals in 11 Scottish Premiership appearances this season, but has yet to find the back of the net in the Champions League despite starting all three group games.
O’Riley may not have found the net in October's draw with Atleti but he was a threat for the Scottish champions throughout.
In this season’s Champions League, Celtic are rock bottom for shots per 90 minutes, averaging just 8.3. Rodgers must find a way to increase this number if his team is to qualify for the competition’s last 16.
In O’Riley, though, Celtic have an attack-minded midfielder who can pose a threat from outside the box with a long-range effort or simply test Jan Oblak with a strike on target.
Long shots might be what Celtic are limited to against Atleti at the Metropolitano, but we're not overlooking O'Riley's odds to have one shot on target on the night.
Atletico Madrid vs Celtic Tip 4: Matt O’Riley over 0.5 shots on target - 8/5 at Unibet
