World Grand Prix betting tips:
- Michael van Gerwen to win the tournament - 4/1 with Unibet
- Luke Humphries to win the tournament E/W - 10/1 with BoyleSports
- Dave Chisnall to win the tournament E/W - 22/1 with Betfred
The uniquely formatted World Grand Prix of Darts returns to our screens on Monday for 2023’s edition of the only tournament in which players are required to start each leg of a match by hitting a double.
Betting sites have last year's winner Michael van Gerwen as the slight favourite to win the tournament ahead of world No 1 Gerwyn Price, with current world champion Michael Smith a close third.
The favoured three candidates have dominated the oche for some time now and it would be no surprise to see any of them emerge victorious from the Morningside Arena.
Last time round, Van Gerwen defeated Nathan Aspinall 5-3 in the final in what could easily have been a whitewash win for the six-time champion, but a spirited response by the Asp kept the scoreline respectable.
Joint-favourite Price won the competition in 2020 and he will be looking to get himself back to winning ways as we approach the business end of the year.
Callan Rydz, Mike de Decker, Luke Woodhouse and Brendan Dolan are the biggest outsiders in this year’s tournament and they are all available at 200/1 with bookmakers.
Magic Mike’s hunt for seventh title
It comes as no surprise to see MVG as one of the frontrunners given his success over the past decade or so in this tournament. The deadly Dutchman is hunting down his seventh Grand Prix title as he edges closer to Phil Taylor’s incredible feat of 11 Grand Prix successes.
Michael won’t have things all his own way and has one of the toughest draws in round one, facing the up and coming Josh Rock when beginning his defence of the title.
Should Van Gerwen triumph, he will then face either compatriot Dirk van Duijvenbode or Brendan Dolan in round two, before a potential projected clash with 2021 winner Jonny Clayton in the quarter-finals.
Coming into this one off the back of a World Series win on home soil in Amsterdam, Van Gerwen will be full of confidence and is always an imperious presence on the stage.
It’s always a nostalgic event for MVG when playing in the Grand Prix as it was the first of his 65 televised title wins to date.
It all started back in 2012 when a fresh-faced Van Gerwen defeated Mervyn King 6-4 in the final, lighting the flame to a decade of Dutch dominance.
The 34-year-old is currently world No 2, but when playing his best stuff there is no doubt he is the one to beat and this could well be the case in Leicester.
Tip: Michael van Gerwen to win the tournament - 4/1 with Unibet
Luke eyeing a first major win
Luke Humphries is playing the best darts in the world at present and is well worth his place as fourth favourite to claim his first major title at the World Grand Prix.
Currently occupying sixth position in the PDC rankings, Cool Hand will take on the 2017 winner Daryl Gurney in round one with the winner facing either Dave Chisnall or Luke Woodhouse for a place in the quarter-final.
Humphries has been rampant in recent months, picking up the European Darts Matchplay title in Germany for the second successive year.
Alongside a title success, the Berkshire flyer recently recorded a brace of nine-dart finishes that came in the Players Championships and the Hungarian Darts Open, showing he is capable in both stage and floor events.
Although Humphries has never progressed past the last 16 in this competition, he will be confident of making the latter stages this time around having had such a successful 2023.
The 10/1 offered by tournament sponsors BoyleSports is a tad shorter than the 14/1 that was offered on Cool Hand Luke to win this trophy last year and the 28-year-old will be desperate to end the search for that elusive major trophy sooner rather than later.

Chizzy’s maximums to cause destruction
Dave Chisnall is widely regarded as one of the best 180 hitters in world darts, which does him a world of good when heading into a tournament like the Grand Prix.
It has always been the doubles that have faltered Chizzy’s pursuit for a major title but, similarly to Humphries, his recent form and double hitting under pressure gives us the incentive to select the St Helens native for an each-way bet at odds of 25/1.
The 43-year-old won the most recent European Tour title, lifting the Hungarian Darts Trophy just under a month ago, and confidence is at an all-time high.
Chizzy has been a two-time finalist in this tournament (2013 and 2019), showing he has what it takes to compete with the best.
If he can overcome Luke Woodhouse in round one, he will have full belief he can overturn Humphries to get to another quarter-final in one of his favourite tournaments.
He enters this year’s edition hoping it’ll be third-time lucky and as Chizzy still lacks that major title at present, he could end the frequent debate over whether he is the best player to never have won one.
Sitting 12th in the PDC rankings on the back of some impressive triumphs this year, we believe that with the firepower Chizzy possesses he is worthy of an each-way bet.
Of course, it's impossible for all three of our selections to come in, but each-way punters may prefer to choose just one E/W pick here, with Chizzy providing the longer odds.
