UK weather forecast: England has its hottest day of the year but cooler weather is on its way

Cooler weather, some showers and fresher conditions are expected as the week continues, forecasters say

England saw the hottest day of the year so far over the weekend as many people marked England’s World Cup win over Sweden by basking in the 30C heat that reached much of the country.

Others flocked to beaches, parks and pub gardens to enjoy the balmy weather.

It was the Hampshire town of Gosport that saw the hottest temperature however, the mercury soaring to 32.4C on Sunday.

As thousands celebrated Pride in London, temperatures reached over 31C in parts of London.

However, cooler weather, some showers and fresher conditions are expected as the week continues, forecasters said.

Meteorologists at the Met Office said it was expected to remain warm across much of the country, although slightly lower temperatures are forecast as a cool front makes its way down from Scotland.

Isolated showers are also expected across parts of the UK this week, particularly the northwest, after one of the driest Junes on record.

As a result some some water companies including United Utilities have asked the public for help so they don’t have to bring in a hosepipe ban.

Northern Ireland already has a ban in place and a new ban was introduced in Ireland late last week.

“The problem with showers is they are very hit and miss,” Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson told The Independent. “Some places could get them and they will be very heavy but other places could be bone dry.”

He said that while Tuesday and Wednesday was expected to be slightly cooler, with temperatures in the 20s across much of the country, temperatures should start to rise from Thursday onwards and it is likely to be hot again by the weekend.

Forecasters do not think the heatwave is over, but in a week’s time, the weather is likely to become more unpredictable.

“There are increasing signs it will turn more unsettled,” Mr Wilson said. ”It will be a bit cooler and fresher and a greater chance of catching a bit of cloud of rain, particularly towards the northwest. The further north and west, the greater chance of rain will be.”

A heat health watch alert remains in place today. In the southwest of England a Level 2 alert warns of an 80 per cent chance of heatwave conditions, while the rest of England has a Level 1 alert in place.

Pollen levels are also expected to be high in England today.

The hottest day so far for the whole of the UK was on 28 June when temperatures reached 33.3C in Porthmadog in Wales.
