Is anyone really surprised that Trump hung his Kurdish allies out to dry?

Donald Trump says Kurds 'didn't help in Second World War'

Of course the Kurds couldn’t expect their American “allies” to protect them from a Turkish attack. As Donald Trump points out so pertinently, the Kurds didn’t fight on the American side in the Second World War. Come to that, the Kurds didn’t fight on the American side in the American War of Independence either.

Just how barking mad does a US President have to be before he is quietly institutionalised to protect the rest of the world from his insanity?

Quid pro quo

Maybe if the Kurds had also offered to have a Trump Tower built in their territory, Trump might not have allowed his friend to invade.

Wilful and dishonest

In an open letter to EU foreign ministers, Jeremy Hunt has said: “I fear a profound and mutual lack of understanding is leading the EU to make the same mistakes over and over again”.

I’d almost forgotten about Jeremy Hunt but, since he has sought to remind us of his parliamentary existence, I’d like to offer him my own open letter: “Dear Mr Hunt, I fear a profound lack of understanding of the EU and its aims, and of the many, many benefits which have accrued to the UK as a direct result of its EU membership, is leading the UK government to make – wilfully and, worse, dishonestly – the same mistakes over and over again.”

Keep democracy alive

The question we should all be asking ourselves is this – “was I as well informed about the implications of voting either way in the 2016 referendum as I am now?” I certainly wasn’t, and I suspect most people weren’t either. This is the fundamental reason why a Final Say or People’s Vote is essential. To call it “a betrayal of democracy” is beyond absurd; it is a betrayal of democracy NOT to do it.

Reality bites

Thank you, Dame Sally Davies. At last, some sound advice on how to tackle the huge issue of child obesity. During our next train trip home from a long day out, I shall try to remember that when my seven-year-old asks for his neatly cut carrot and celery strips to dip into his smokey hummus pot, to sternly ask him to refrain until we get home. We have a full jar of sugary treats from last week’s party that need eating up!

Wagging the dog

Is there really such a paucity of news that you have to devote virtually a whole page plus editorial comment to the tedious spat between two here-today-gone-tomorrow WAGs?

You rightly limit your coverage of the Royal Family. Is it not about time that the antics of these women, whose main claim to fame lies in the fact that one is married to the spud-faced nipper and the other one to another footballer, were left to the anonymity they so clearly deserve?
