Sir: Your newspaper speaks of 'no official awards for Dr Turing' ('Unsung gay hero of a secret war is honoured with road sign', 30 December). This is not the whole truth for he was awarded the OBE in 1946 for his work in the war. The medal was subsequently given by his mother to Sherborne School where he was from 1926 to 1931. This medal remains one of the most prized possessions in the school archives.

It should be added that his old school has always held Alan Turing in great respect and the Alan Turing Laboratories were named after him in 1966. It is good now to see Manchester following our lead.

Yours sincerely,

JEREMY BARKER
