What sets Labour apart in the run-up to the election? We’re actually dedicated to listening to you

At a time when local and community issues have been swept to the side, we’re determined to take on the concerns of the people

Running along paths, up flights of stairs and bouncing from door to door with enthusiasm is the mainstay of door-knocking sessions. This weekend was no exception.

You can never be sure of the reception you are going to get when a door opens. Wearing my biggest smile and hoping for the best, I set about having what is essentially a mini job interview with everyone I meet.

Having had three elections in three years, I have managed to harness the skill of being able to tell within the first 10 seconds whether someone will be receptive to my messages.

Living in the heart of the community means that I also have conversations while out shopping, on the bus, in the gym, in a restaurant and on the street. With only two and a half weeks to go, there is no stopping!

It has been heartening to hear that my messages have been cutting across social lines and that people are happy with how hard I have worked at supporting my community.

Whether it be issues of Brexit and voting against triggering Article 50, campaigning for more money for local schools, or supporting local businesses, it is a relief that my efforts are well known and recognised.

This is, however, a double-edged sword with some voters assuming the majority I had at the last election means I am “safe” at this election and people can afford not to vote on the day. A December election means the colder, darker nights risk a lower turnout.

With a changing political landscape, voter apathy and some voters upset with the main parties, there can be no room for complacency. It goes without saying, Tooting is not for turning and I will be campaigning until the polls close on 12 December.
