Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Lot 17: The Last Elephant
The Last Elephant is one of a series of images on the subject of the extinction of animals which John Gledhill began working on in the early 1990s. At that time the issue of endangered animal species was in the news again and this moved him to have the elephant occupy the central 'space' while the figures are arranged around it.
The people in the image are on the whole indifferent to the fact that the elephant portrayed is the last of its kind and there is a kind of carnival atmosphere - only one girl in the foreground tries to draw the crowd's attention to the headline in the paper the man is holding.
Originally the elephant was in a cage but the artist found that the bars of the cage interfered with one's view of the animal so in the end he left them out.
This print is made on a handmade Japanese paper in a strictly limited edition of 20 individually signed by the artist.
The Last Elephant 2008. Colour linocut. 50cm X 58cm. Printed on handmade Japanese paper.

Lot 18: FAMILY PORTRAIT
Entitled Elelphant Group on Bare Earth, Amboseli 2008 this measures 13”x31”, and is one of an edition of 25 by photographer Nick Brandt. In the words of one critic: “The haunting images in Nick Brandt’s ‘On This Earth’ seem less like a documentary than like spirit photos of mythical beasts. Living testimony to the ghostly beauty and the fragility of nature, these magnificent creatures will convince you (if indeed you had any doubts) that animals not only have minds and hearts but also spirits and souls.” Space for Giants will use 50 per cent of the proceeds of this sale to support a charity called Big Life develop - a human-elephant conflict management plan for the Amboselli ecosystem, in Kenya. www.nickbrandt.com. Reserve is £3,400
