Grace Dent: Dappy's new hashtag tattoo is unlikely to get him trending

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Tiny, shouty pop-star and ex-Celebrity Big Brother contestant Dappy has a new tattoo. It’s on his face - his cheek, to be exact. It’s the Twitter symbol # - or “hashtag”, as the digitally-minded among us say. Dappy’s reasoning for this was faultless. “The reason I got a # Tatted on my FACE was simply 2 make sure IT stays trending 4 ever.”
Again, I’ll translate for the less social media-aware. This keyboard symbol allows Twitter users to find each other more rapidly, and sometimes leads to subjects become trending topics. Dappy has had one tattooed on to his face so that whenever anyone points at it he can make the weak joke that “his face is a trending topic”.
It’s not a very good joke, or a very deep message, and from a distance the tattoo looks like a squashed bluebottle. On Twitter, it failed to become a trending topic. Tattoo in haste, repent at leisure.
