Turkish opposition leader forced to flee rally after protesters pelt stones at campaign bus

A Turkish opposition leader cut short a rally in the city of Erzurum after pro-government protesters pelted his campaign bus with stones.

Ekrem Imamoglu, who is the current mayor of Istanbul, was speaking in support of the CHP party’s presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

Violence flared up when supporters of the current government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan infiltrated the rally and began throwing stones.

The city of Erzurum is considered a stronghold of the the government’s AKP party.

Presidential and parliamentary elections take place in Turkey on Sunday 14 May.
