Newly-elected Labour MP Keir Mather, the youngest in the Commons, has said that he understands the “enormity of what has just happened” after overturning a 20,137 Conservative majority in Selby and Ainsty.

In a victory speech, the 25-year-old declared that his party had “rewritten the rules on where Labour can win.”

“People have opened their doors to us and embraced our positive vision for the future,” he added.

Mr Mather was born in Hull and grew up near Selby before going to Oxford University, Labour has said.
