The 1990s was an era of change, of liberation – but not all the momentous achievements listed in this video will seem so progressive when you consider how backward some of the cultural attitudes still were.

For example, divorce was only made legal in the Republic of Ireland in 1996, and that was only after a referendum that saw the no side defeated by a margin of just 0.5 per cent.
