Bees immediately plummet to ground when lights turn off

Bees immediately plummet to the ground when the light inside of a room is switched off, a fascinating video has shown.

Biotechnology and Biological Science PhD student Hamish Symington captured the moment dozens of the creatures immediately hit the deck the second they’re plunged into darkness.

The University of Cambridge student told the Independent: “The thing that’s surprising here is that it’s such a sudden switch-off, almost like there’s some kind of hard-wiring for ‘dark = no flying’.

“Some people have suggested it’s an adaptation to predators flying overhead, ‘see a shadow, drop to avoid being caught’.”
