The news that British Airways may shed 10,000 jobs as part of a cost- cutting programme was greeted by at least one industry insider with a muttered "what - only 10,000?". BA seems intent on cutting out even the business of flying. Most of its recent expansion has come from franchising routes to other, lower-cost airlines. BA could end up as a reservations computer, an image - and a pounds 1bn annual profit.
