Burns Night is celebrated in style across Scotland tomorrow on the poet's 250th birthday. On Monday, the Chinese New Year ushers in the year of the Ox. One of the biggest celebrations is in Hong Kong, with a night parade and fireworks (discoverhongkong.com).

Whale shark season starts at the beginning of February in Kenya. The world's largest shark – harmless to humans – can be spotted at dive sites around Malindi and Watamu until March (magicalkenya.com).

And luxury spa brand Six Senses opens its first resort in Jordan at the end of February. It is set in a ravine 264m below sea level, near the Dead Sea (sixsenses.com).
