Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Today...

The Holiday and Travel Show is at Manchester Central until tomorrow. Over 800 exhibitors will be enticing visitors (holidayshows.com).

All eyes will be on Washington this Tuesday when Barack Obama is inaugurated as the 44th US President. But Obama fever is gripping Kenya, where events are planned in Kogelo, where Obama senior was born and raised (magicalkenya.com and obamainauguration2009. com). The Niagara Icewine Festival runs until next weekend in Ontario, the world's ice wine (a dessert wine made from frozen grapes) capital (niagara winefestival.com).

In the diary...

Australia Day is on 26 January and the biggest celebrations will be held in Perth with a firework display and festive activities (westernaustralia.com). The day will be marked in the UK with events including the Great Australian Wine Experience in Edinburgh and also at the Emirates Stadium, London, on 28 January (wineaustra lia.com/uk). The Winter Wanders weekend is in London from 31 January to 1 February. Don your walking shoes and explore guided walks organised by Walk London (walklondon.org.uk).
