You’ve wrestled with your conscience for months, but can stand it no longer. The FA Cup Final was your last taste of football action and – suddenly – you simply have to get to the Fifa World Cup in South Africa. Just to soak up the atmosphere, while the rest of the planet goes soccer mad. But surely by now the flights will be booked up, and any remaining seats will cost a Febregas-sized transfer fee? Well, no. The World Cup may be agonisingly close (11 June-11 July), but it’s still possible to get to South Africa at a reasonable price, provided you’re prepared to take an indirect flight.

Longhaul specialist Travelmood ( www.travelmood.com) is offering return fares to Johannesburg with Etihad Airways from just £579 per person, based on a 3 or 7 June departure from London Heathrow and a 13 June return (which would have you in the city for the opening match between South Africa and Uruguay). You can choose to fly straight to Johannesburg and back, changing planes in Abu Dhabi, or fly to Abu Dhabi on 3 June and stay for a few days before taking the onwards flight to Johannesburg on 7 June.

For more flexibility you can fly via Dubai with Emirates from £859 per person based on a 4 June departure from London Gatwick, returning any day between 14 and 20 June 2010. Again, you can opt to stop over in Dubai for a few days either on the way out or on the return at no extra cost. You’ll need to save all you can on flights: accommodation in Johannesburg is scarce and expensive during the World Cup.

There are, of course, more realistic – and relaxing – holiday dreams you could be pursuing during June. Travel City Direct ( www.travelcitydirect.com) is offering seven nights in Negril in Jamaica for £699 per person, based on two adults sharing. The price includes seven nights B&B accommodation at Rooms on the Beach, return flights from Gatwick and resort transfers. Departures between 12-22 June.

Alternatively, Seaside Hotels ( www.seaside-hotels.com) is offering seven-nights half-board accommodation at the four-star Los Jameos Playa in Lanzarote from £455 per person, based on two sharing. The hotel includes a spa and wellness centre, as well as two swimming pools, and the price includes return flights from Gatwick departing on 15 June.

Ebookers ( www.ebookers.com) has a short break to Milan on offer, with three nights B&B at the four-star Best Western Milton hotel and return flights from Glasgow costing just £256 per person, based on two sharing. Meanwhile, Travelbag ( www.travelbag.co.uk) will take you to New York from £459 per person, including Kuwait Airlines flights from Heathrow and three nights at the four-star Carlton Hotel. (The offer is valid for booking made before 29 June, for travel between 1 and 30 June and is based on two people sharing.)

Finally, if you’re looking for an immediate departure, what about a week in the Azores? Provided you can travel between 22-29 May, Sunvil Discovery ( www.sunvil.co.uk) is offering seven nights’ accommodation, return flights from Gatwick or Manchester and transfers for a boggling £389 per person, based on two sharing.
