Luton Airport has unveiled a festive aircraft covered in Christmas lights – although don’t expect to see it in the sky any time soon.

Ground staff at the busy Bedfordshire airport, voted Britain’s least favourite airport three years in a row, spent 24 hours covering an easyJet A320 Airbus with lights, plus a 5,000sq metre aircraft hangar with Christmas lights and decorations for a special Christmas light show for staff and passengers.

More than 8,500 choreographed lights and 1.5 miles of LED micro bulbs were used to create the light show. It involved a team of 10 special effects artists and lighting designers, who spent four weeks designing and creating the light show, which claims to be the world’s biggest ever light show involving an aircraft.

Luton Airport and easyJet worked together on the project, which aimed to recognise the efforts of airport staff involved in the three-year redevelopment of the airport, which is set to increase its annual capacity to 18 million passengers by 2020.

Operations director of London Luton Airport, Neil Thompson, said: “As we reach the end of our redevelopment – the largest in the airports 80-year history – we wanted to extend a huge thank you to staff and customers and give them a special Christmas gift.”

Tina Milton, director of cabin services at easyJet, said: “Most people who work in a regular office get to partake in festive decorating, so we laid down the challenge to ground crew to create the most spectacular light show featuring a plane.”

This morning it was announced that Alberto Martin has been named the new CEO of Luton Airport, taking over from Nick Barton.
