Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Sydney Opera House sails will be lit up in a colorful, 3D spectacle for the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere, Vivid Sydney.

Iconic buildings across the city will be transformed into awe-inspiring installations through the use of sophisticated laser techniques and 3D technology. The Sydney Opera House will be the focal point of the enormous artwork, which includes 40 stunning light art installations created by local and international artists.

"At Vivid Sydney, creativity changes everything. There is nothing more thrilling than seeing the Sydney Opera House transformed into a canvas of bright colours and breathtaking images - one of the world’s most famous buildings singing and dancing in a way that few great monuments ever could," said Vivid Sydney executive producer Ignatius Jones.

An expected 400,000 spectators will attend the third edition of Vivid Sydney to enjoy the free and ticketed sensory experiences. Highlights of which include giant light sculptures of floating jellyfish, erupting fire installations in Sydney Harbour (the largest and most ambitious live fire show ever produced in Australia), music performances from local and international musicians, kid-friendly interactive sculptures and an enormous sketchpad on which attendees can draw their own light art.

French-based digital projection artists Superbien will be "Lighting the Sails" on the Sydney Opera House with performances that push the boundaries of animation, photography, light, space and graphic design.

While the exteriors of Sydney's buildings are cast in a colorful glow, more than 50 global and local creative leaders will light up the interiors with in-depth debates and thought-provoking keynotes that explore "the potential of the creative industries to transform society and re-shape our economy."

The Sydney Opera House’s Playhouse stage will be graced by the likes of Etsy European director Matthew Stinchcomb, Future Shorts and Secret Cinema founder Fabien Riggall, general manager of Intel Australia and NZ Philip Cronin, co-founder of the MIT Media Lab and the One Laptop Per Child program Barry Vercoe, and executive director of development at CSIRO Dr James Bradfield Moody.

"This year’s program gives audiences the opportunity to connect with the ideas that will shape tomorrow's society, network with the sharpest industry minds, and be inspired by the city in a celebration of creativity," said Vivid Creative Sydney director Jess Scully.

Vivid Sydney is one of five signature events on the New South Wales (NSW) Events Calendar developed by Events NSW for the Government of NSW.
