Recently restored and opened as The Chatwal hotel, this art deco jewel recreates a 1930s ambience with wood-panelled walls, chrome features and period lighting in the lobby. The atmosphere continues in the bedrooms, with vintage prints and a minibar featuring a bespoke cocktail set, custom playing cards and a backgammon set. The Lambs Club Bar pays homage to the hotel's original incarnation as The Lambs social club for theatrical workers.

The Savoy, London
This recently restored icon maintains its elegant fusion of classic Edwardian and art deco interior design, teaming polished marble floors with silk wallpaper in the Thames Foyer. Murano glass chandeliers and views over the Thames are discreetly accompanied by iPod docks and rain-head showers in the rooms. The quintessentially English Savoy Grill no longer plays host to Winston Churchill, but now has Gordon Ramsay overseeing its kitchen, and the brand new Beaufort Bar – in opulent gold leaf and black – is built upon the original cabaret stage.

Peace Hotel, Shanghai
The green copper pyramid that crowns the Peace Hotel is as symbolic now as it was when the hotel opened on The Bund, Shanghai's imposing line of riverfront buildings, in 1929. Revived last year after a three-year overhaul, the hotel retains its glamorous deco style but has added modern extravagances such as a sky-lit pool. The Jazz Bar harks back to the musical and sartorial preferences of the Twenties and Thirties, but the menu is resolutely modern: it even caters for macrobiotic, raw and vegan diets.

The Raleigh, Miami
The Raleigh is a leading example South Beach's art deco verve. The keyhole-shaped turquoise-tiled pool is often called the most beautiful in America, and the Martini Bar offers cocktails as colourful as the décor. Even the beach has a retro edge with coral pink-striped sun loungers.

Art Deco Imperial, Prague
With its cubist front, stained glass and mosaics, the Imperial goes out to dazzle. Built in 1914 and restored in 2007, it revels in art deco. In the rooms, touches such as decorative headboards keep it rooted in history.

The Midland, Morecambe
Designed by Oliver Hill in 1933, the Midland adds vintage style to this seaside resort. An £11m restoration transformed the derelict site into a shining white example of deco architecture, with 44 bedrooms and views of the coast.
