From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The modern phenomenon of walking like a zombie, transfixed by your smartphone/tablet, usually at worst causes you to walk into a lamppost, but on Saturday morning in Sydney it caused an airport to be evacuated.
A passenger exiting a plan was so engrossed by his iPad that he wandered past security and out into Terminal 3, causing an alert to be sounded after he was spotted on CCTV and the evacuation of everyone in the terminal.
"The man disembarked a flight and left. It appears he wasn't paying attention, was looking at his iPad, forgot something and walked back past (the security area)," a Qantas spokeswoman told The Sydney Morning Herald.
"He has departed now."
Passengers were rescreened and let back in following the man's absent-minded amble, with the delay only lasting about an hour.
The incident highlights not only our obsession with technology, but also how alarmingly easy it must be to bypass security at Sydney Airport.
