Vilnius, in Lithuania, was recently revealed as the cheapest city break this autumn, according to research by TravelSupermarket. But what about the rest of the world?

Amid the news one in 10 UK travellers have booked their holiday for next summer already, here’s where to go and what to do for a range of budgets.

For £100

  • Spend a couple of days eating your bodyweight in francesinhas – a gut-busting sandwich which originated in Porto – with return flights to Portugal’s second city courtesy of TAP Air Portugal.
  • Explore Kerala’s peaceful backwaters with two nights on a traditional houseboat, booked through Karma Kerala.
  • Take a 3.5-hour food tour in Paris with Flavors of Paris, visiting delicious destinations in the neighbourhood of Saint-Germain.

For £200

  • Spend four nights in the Lake District with Macs Adventure, a walking trip starting in Ambleside, and taking in panoramic views over Ullswater from the Grisedale Valley, before finishing in Keswick.
  • Explore the bright lights and desert vistas of Dubai, with return flights on Virgin Atlantic.
  • Get closer to nature during a night in a two-person yurt in Telemark, Norway – complete with outdoor bathtubs – via Canopy & Stars. The package also includes food cooked by the a chef, and guided bike hire.
