Seeing the Northern Lights is the most sought-after travel experience, according to a new poll.

The survey of 2,000 adults found travelling on the Orient Express and visiting Chernobyl were also experiences participants most wanted to have.

A safari trip in Africa and cruising around the Caribbean were also named as respondents’ dream holidays.

Visiting Mount Fuji in Japan and Easter Island were also named by the adults asked.

On average, participants have ticked off three trips from their bucket list so far.

A spokeswoman for Lottoland, who commissioned the poll, said: “Britons are now ditching traditional sunny beach holidays in favour of more remote destinations which offer never-seen-before activities, sights and scenery.

“Travelling to far-flung destinations and experiencing some of what the wonderful world has to offer has become more popular than ever before.”

Four in 10 respondents described themselves as “well-travelled” and 7 per cent had visited more than five continents.

However, 53 per cent said they were held back from travelling to exotic destinations by a lack of money.

A further 16 per cent of those polled said they had too many responsibilities to travel the world.

Nineteen per cent said they did not have time to plan an adventurous holiday.
