World’s most energy efficient desktop gets a redesign, now smaller than a novel

Apple HQ has been flat out with announcements this month. In the wake of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4, Apple's diminutive Mac mini has also appeared on the company's website - smaller and more energy efficient than ever before.

The desktop computer, which looks more like a portable hard drive than a PC, is just 19.7 cm (7.7 inches) square and 3.6 cm (1.4 inches) thin. The Mac mini reportedly consumes a tiny 10W of power at idle (about half the average wattage of a Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb).

Inside, the specifications have been updated too. The Mac mini comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife, a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a slot-load 8X SuperDrive optical drive for reading and writing DVDs and CDs, a 320GB hard drive, AirPort Extreme wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, a SD card slot, a HDMI port, and a Mini DisplayPort.

CompuLab's Windows-based Fit-PC2i , a tiny desktop machine branded as the world's smallest desktop PC, measures in at 11.5 x 10.1 x 2.7 cm but doesn't quite have the same allure (or hardware specs) as the Mac mini's aluminum unibody.

The Mac mini is priced from $699 and can be purchased from Apple.com and is available now.
