Monzo, the app-based debit card, has broken.

The issues mean that people are getting to pay for things and finding their payments are rejected.

The company confirmed on Twitter that it was being hit by problems and was working to solve them.

Monzo sent a push alert to users of its app telling them to "take another card with you today – the Monzo card is currently being declined". It confirmed that the problems apply to payments and transfers, too.

"I was very disappointed to arrive at Whole Foods and find that I couldn’t buy my usual vegan yoghurt alternative for breakfast," said Ibrahim Salha, The Independent's head of audience and regular Monzo user. "But it was so disappointing because Monzo is normally so good – when it’s up, I love it, so it’s a tragedy when it’s down!

"It was a shame that I didn’t know about it in advance, though, and more than a little embarrassing to be rejected by the cashier."

Update: Monzo is now back online. A notification was sent to users saying the "earlier issues have been fully resolved and your card and account should be fully functional again now".
