Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

EDMUND MAHONY

CHAIRMAN OF TATTERSALLS

My heart says I would very much like to see Housemaster win, because not only did we sell him [for 70,000 guineas] as a yearling but his trainer Michael Bell is a great mate. I think those Chester trials are a good guide, run over the same sort of track that needs a handy horse. But my head says that Dubai Millennium will win. He impressed me at Goodwood and these horses that go into the Derby unbeaten have a great track record. But it is an open year and with a big field whatever wins will probably need luck in running.

DAVID HOOD

WILLIAM HILL BOOKMAKERS

I think Lucido will take a lot of beating, if only because there are fewer holes in his form than many of the others. Oath was just behind him at Newbury and then won well at Chester. There are stamina doubts over Beat All, the favourite. I'm not sure Dubai Millennium will let himself down if the ground is in any way firm, he didn't seem to at Goodwood. My gut reaction over Housemaster was that he won a moderate trial and I think that Salford Express won what was an ordinary Dante by dint of an outstanding ride.

WILLIE CARSON

FOUR-TIME WINNING JOCKEY

To win a Derby a horse has to be sound in mind and sound in limb, well-balanced and to have had an uninterrupted preparation. My four against the field are Oath, Lucido, Beat All and Salford Express. I'm biased towards Oath, of course, because I manage the interests of his owners, so I know him pretty well. Last year he was a playboy, but he's turned a corner and grown up and his concentration is now terrific. I can't have Dubai Millennium, he's a big heavy horse whom Epsom might not suit and I don't think he will stay.

RICHARD PHILLIPS

EPSOM-BORN JUMPS TRAINER

Beat All has been impressive but his name isn't PC - it should be Tie With All. Dubai Millennium is a year too early. Salford Express couldn't even win a Grand National called that. Housemaster's name has already been tested; the chap that runs the syndicate that owns him always practises commentating on his horses to make sure they sound suitable. But,if his stable comes to form in time, it could be Brancaster and one for the old adage "fourth in the Guineas, absolute rubbish". Sorry, that should be "fourth in the Guineas, first in the Derby".

DAVID PLATT

GROUP-WINNING OWNER

If the gallops reports on Beat All are right then he must be a very decent horse. But if I had to pick one then it would be Oath, and not just because I backed him when he won so convincingly at Chester. That looked a good performance; he won so easily and quickened well, which you like to see. Glamis from John Gosden's yard [home of Platt's Handsome Ridge] disappointed last time out - perhaps the ground was against him. John has a good record in the Derby and if Glamis runs to his best he should be thereabouts.

SUE ELLEN

EPSOM MANAGING DIRECTOR

It is an open race, which is quite a good thing because if there is a real hot favourite and he gets beaten there's a slight feeling of anticlimax. When Benny The Dip beat Silver Patriarch in the most exciting finish for years it was a bit hollow because the wonder horse, Entrepreneur, had been beaten. Daliapour won at Epsom in the spring so I feel some loyalty, and it would be wonderful if Salford Express could win a Derby for David Elsworth to go with his Cheltenham Gold Cup. But I think Beat All is the one.
