Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sam Torrance maintained his reputation of always playing well in a Ryder Cup year by winning the Italian Open with a last round of 67 in Milan yesterday.

The 41-year-old Scot finished with a 19-under-par aggregate of 269, two shots ahead of Spain's Jose Rivero. He was never really threatened, even though Rivero, playing just ahead of him, birdied three of the last four holes.

It was Torrance's 19th victory on the European Tour, and the victory sent him from 10th to fifth in the Ryder Cup points table. His ambition is to make the Ryder Cup team for an eighth successive time at Oak Hill, New York, in September.

Torrance had six birdies - three in each half - with only one bogey, at the 11th. But the main feature of his round was the way he sank difficult putts at the 12th and 14th holes to save par when Rivero was beginning to charge.

Torrance pulled a muscle at the top of his left leg on Thursday morning, and did not decide to compete until just before he was due to tee off in the first round. "I decided to play and you could say it was the best decision of my life," he said.

After his course-record 63 on Saturday, Torrance began the final round just one shot ahead of the Irishman, Ronan Rafferty, and Costantino Rocca of Italy, with Rivero two shots further back. But while Rivero had a last- round 66, six under par, neither Rafferty nor Rocca could make a similar challenge.

They both shot 73 to fall back to joint third with England's Paul Broadhurst, the Welshman Mark Litton and Emanuele Canonica, of Italy, on 276.
