Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The European Community championships, due to be held in Antwerp in October, have been cancelled. The ATP Tour chief executive officer, Mark Miles, said the decision was made after organisers could not guarantee the construction of two new courts at the Antwerp Sportpaleis. The tournament, famous for its diamond-studded golden racket trophy, was this year promoted to "Super-Nine" status, one of the nine biggest one-week events in the ATP calendar.

The South African Open gained a temporary reprieve yesterday when an anonymous Cape Town businessman put up the 1.2m rand (£210,000) bridging finance needed to keep the event in the country. The Tennis South Africa Marketing manager, Francois Baird, said: "We now have time to find a sponsor or, failing which, to sell the event for its true market value. The ATP is assisting us in devising an attractive sponsorship package."

The first WTA clay court tournament to be staged in Britain will take place at the West Hants club in Bournemouth from 16 to 20 May.
