After the London Olympics of 2012, it seemed at the start of this year that topping those events was an impossible task.
However, 2013 has been another vintage year for British sport - while there have been some remarkable feats further afield.
Andy Murray finally ending the wait for a British singles winner at Wimbledon and Chris Froome following in Bradley Wiggins' trail to win the Tour de France are just a couple of the incredible achievements this year.
But for all the successes of 2013, there have also been some incredible lows. And they came no lower than when Lance Armstrong admitted to doping during all seven of his Tour de France victories.
And any summation of the year would be incomplete without a mention for Sir Alex Ferguson who bowed out in fitting style with Manchester United winning the Premier League title yet again.
Here, we've collated the 100 greatest sporting moments of the year.

First up was Mo. The double gold medal winning hero of London 2012 was at it again, becoming only the second man in history to complete a long distance 'double-double'. The 'Mo-bot' was out in full force after Farah was best in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters to repeat his Olympic feat. Ohuruogu got in on the limelight too with another truly remarkable race. She became the first British woman to win two World titles finishing first by just four thousandths of a second in a thrilling comeback. GETTY IMAGES

Graham Onions took 70 wickets in a stellar season for the England pace man and helped Durham to beat off stiff competition from their Yorkshire rivals to be crowned champions. getty images

In a gripping four set contest the Spaniard claimed the US Open title, beating Djokovic in front of an awe-inspired Arthur Ashe crowd. The America fans were also treated to a home win with Serena Williams recording her fifth US Open title with victory over Victoria Azarenka. GETTY IMAGES

The most successful sailor in Olympic history was drafted in to Oracle Team USA for the America's Cup after they had slipped to an 8-1 deficit and facing a humiliating loss. But with help from Sir Ben, Team Oracle complete one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history. After clawing back to eight-all against the New Zealand team, the final was a winner-takes-all affair. The American team came out on top by 44 seconds to complete a truly remarkable triumph. The victory over his Mexican opponent, who is 13 years his junior, saw the American extend his unbeaten professional record to 45 fights. GETTY IMAGES

But that was just the start of it. The former England manager then went on a rant about the 'busy f******' fourth official before shoving him in the chest. He was banned from stadiums for five games. Ken Norton, the man who broke Ali's jaw, died at the age 70. The play-making assist king penned a five-year deal at the Emirates after Real Madrid accepted Arsenal's £42.5m offer. The 100 sporting moments of 2013 - 61-80 SEPTEMBER<br/> Agbonlahor's 1D tackle<br/> Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor faced the wrath of One Direction fans after his tackle on Louis Tomlinson left the band member in a bundle on the ground. The ill-timed tackle, which took place in a charity match in aid of the Stiliyan Petrov Cancer Foundation, forced Tomlinson to delay his debut for Doncaster Rovers' reserve team and has insured that Agbonlahor will be forever hated by the Directioners, not that he will care about that too much. They certainly made it tough for themselves though, going down 16-2 before staging a comeback worthy of being crowned champions. They became the first side since St Helens in 2006 to do the double and Blake Green lifted the Harry Sunderland Trophy after a thrilling game at Old Trafford. GETTY IMAGES

With two wins from two home matches needed to ensure qualification to next summer's World Cup in Brazil, England came up against stiff opposition in the form of Montenegro and Poland. With the expectant Wembley crowd watching over their every move, things finally clicked for the three lions. 4-1 and 2-0 victories saw off the potentially tricky ties and Roy Hodgson led the nation wide feeling of relief and of a job well done. The England boss used a Nasa joke about a monkey in space to tell his players to give the ball to Townsend. Wins at the Korean, Japanese and Indian Grand Prix saw Vettel retain the Driver's Championship with his victory in India officially giving him the title although the outcome had long been clear. Mumbai smashed their way to 202 for 6 in their innings with Dwayne Smith top scoring with 44. In reply, the spin magic of Harbhajan Singh helped bowl out the Royals in the 19th over as they fell to 169. The fantastically entertaining match was a fitting way for Indian batting star Rahul Dravid to make his last ever cricketing appearance. GETTY IMAGES

The 100 sporting moments of 2013 - 61-80 NOVEMBER<br/> Australia thrash New Zealand in Rugby League World Cup final <br/> Old Trafford played host to the final of the Rugby League World Cup. Sadly, England were knocked out in the semi-finals with the team that defeated them, New Zealand, coming up against Australia in the showdown. What followed was a superb display by the Aussie to win 34-2 and claim the trophy.
