Tomas Berdych beat Rafael Nadal for the first time in 18 attempts to reach the Australian Open semi-finals.
The Spaniard had not lost to the world No 7 for eights but Berdych capitalised on Nadal’s physical frailties to win 6-2, 6-0, 7-6.
It was an impressive display given that the 29-year-old Czech had lost 37 of the last 40 sets he had played against Nadal.
Speaking after the loss, Nadal said, “It was just not my day. I didn't play with the right intensity, the right rhythm. It was a day when the opponent played better than me. I made him play very easy.”
Berdych will play Andy Murray in the semi-final after the Scot defeated Nick Kyrgios.
