Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

There are two British men in the second round in Atlanta, Greg Rusedski joining Tim Henman after defeating Javier Frana, of Argentina, 4-6, 7- 5, 6-3 yesterday.

Goran Ivanisevic, the No 2 seed, was beaten 6-2, 6-4 by South Africa's Marcos Ondruska, who is ranked 104 in the world. Despite Ivanisevic's serves coming in at over 200kph, Ondruska mastered the return, breaking Ivanisevic twice in the first set and once in the second.

The No 3 seed, Sweden's Thomas Enqvist went through but he took two hours to beat Marc-Kevin Goellner, of Germany, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

Richey Reneberg, a late replacement in the US team for Pete Sampras, who has an Achilles tendon injury, was forced to retire because of a groin injury in the third set of his opening round match yesterday against Leander Paes of India.

Reneberg's injury left his participation in doubt for the doubles, in which he is scheduled to play with MaliVai Washington, who staged a second- set comeback to beat Jan Kroslak of Slovakia 6-3, 7-6.

In the women's competition, the second seed, Conchita Martinez of Spain, beat Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 6-1, 6-2 and Monica Seles enjoyed a 6-0, 6-4 opening victory over Li Chen, of China, on Tuesday.
