SERGI BRUGUERA, the French Open champion, and Richard Krajicek yesterday lost their second-round matches in straight sets, bringing the number of seeds who have been knocked out of the Paris Open to five in two days.

Bruguera, the fifth seed, lost 6-4, 6-4 to Arnaud Boetsch, of France, who last month won the Toulouse tournament.

The defeat of Krajicek, who was seeded 11th, was more of an upset. Jared Palmer, who is ranked 124th in the world, survived 17 aces from the Dutchman to prevail 7-5, 7-6.

Pete Sampras, the world No 1, beat his compatriot, David Wheaton, 6-4, 6-2, while Sweden's Stefan Edberg, in the only third-round match, beat Petr Korda, of the Czech Republic, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
