TRACY AUSTIN'S comeback yesterday reached unexpectedly dizzy heights when the 30-year-old American battled to an impressive 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over the world No 12, Katerina Maleeva, in the Evert Cup at Indian Wells, California.
'It is tough to believe. I'm just totally ecstatic,' said Austin, the US Open champion in 1979 and 1981, who is playing her first tournament for four years. 'It felt really, really good to have a match where you guts it out. I haven't done that in a long time. I'm still in shock.'
Austin, a former world No 1 whose career since 1983 has been wrecked by injuries, now faces Stephanie Rottier, of the Netherlands, in the third round.
